The University of Arkansas's costumed mascot.
Charity: The Razorback Foundation
The University of Arkansas's costumed mascot, Big Red, is a symbol of the tenacious spirit embodied in the Razorbacks’ live mascot, Tusk. The University’s athletics teams have been known as the Razorbacks since 1909 around the time football coach Hugo Bezdek referenced his players as a “wild band of razorback hogs” after a victory. The name “Big Red” began appearing in student publications in the 1960s with the official iteration of Big Red making its debut in 1974. A University student was selected as the inaugural performer and that tradition continues today as part of the Razorback Spirit Squad.
Big Red has undergone several evolutions in size, shape and facial expressions evolving into the fierce yet friendly character that can be seen at most Razorback events.
Currently, the Razorbacks are represented by a family of uniformed mascots that can be seen performing and raising the spirit level at the university’s athletic events. Big Red is the traditional mascot that personifies the intimidating fighting spirit of the Razorbacks. To appeal to younger fans, “Sue E”, the classy and sassy female hog, and “Pork Chop”, a mischievous, kid-sized mascot, were added to the line-up. “Boss Hog” is the newest addition, and a crowd favorite. The nine-foot inflatable was introduced to the family during the 1998-99 season. Ribby (a play on RBI) attends every home baseball game and is often seen dancing on the dugouts.
